Ethical Sourcing

The ethical sourcing of diamonds is at the heart of everything we do at Nova Diamonds. We are proud to only purchase diamonds through the world's most respected suppliers who adhere to industry-wide sourcing guidelines.

For something as momentous as the giving and receiving of an engagement or wedding ring, especially when they're made from the most scarce materials on earth, nothing but complete honesty and transparency will suffice.

That’s why we’re giving you an insight into our approach to ethical sourcing. It is our duty to ensure your product comes from a country and company with morally correct policies and business practices. As a result, you can buy from Nova Diamonds with 100% confidence.

What Does Ethically Sourced Mean?

Ethically sourced means diamonds or other precious materials that don't come from conflict areas that are controlled by rebel factions and not recognised governments. So called ‘blood’ diamonds typically come from Central and Western Africa, are often illegally traded and may be funding violence.

Blood diamonds were particularly prevalent in the 1990s due to an expensive civil war in Sierra Leone. It spanned over a decade and was partly financed by the illegal trade of diamonds, with profits used to buy weapons. Conflict diamonds have also sustained violence in Angola, The Ivory Coast, The Democratic Republic of the Congo, Liberia, Republic of the Congo, and Zimbabwe.

In response to civil wars perpetuated by blood diamonds, governments and charities from around the world created the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme in 2003 with a goal of ending and preventing the trade. The Kimberley Process has 54 members representing 81 participating countries. It has managed to reduce the conflict trade to less than 1% in the global diamond industry.

Nova Diamonds is unwavering in its support of the Kimberley Process. We will always back and promote any initiative that works to uphold legitimacy in the diamond trade.

Our Approach to Responsible Mining

Our diamonds are mined across the world, from Africa and Australia to Russia and Canada. Along with the joy they bring recipients, diamonds can be a major source of good in many countries, helping both established and emerging economies as well as supporting employees.

Seeing as Nova Diamonds observes the highest ethical standards, we insist that our suppliers and partners do the same too. Responsible mining is an important issue that deserves our attention, which is why we will:

  • Work to ensure that our gold and metals come from suppliers that meet the highest human rights, social, and environmental criteria.
  • Engage suppliers to influence the sourcing of products such as diamonds, gemstones and precious metals.
  • Research mining, refinement, and manufacturing practices of materials that move through the supply chain.
  • Give preference to suppliers that source materials from mines that observe high standards of environmental stewardship.
  • Commit to increased material sourcing from recycled and secondary sources.
  • Measure and establish benchmarks with a goal of continuous improvement.
Our Approach to Sustainable Metals and Stones

Both jewellery customers and the industry are exploring the possibility of more sustainable metals and stones. One way of achieving this is by making the jewellery supply chain Fairtrade certified at every stage to ensure the highest ethical standards are always upheld.

Fairtrade is a global agreement between producers and exporters to promote greater equality and fairness in the exchange of commodities. The movement’s long term goal is to reduce the disparity of wealth between nations. Gold is one commodity in particular that Fairtrade covers quite extensively as 90% of all miners work in artisanal and small scale mines (ASM).

If you are interested in Fairtrade metals or stones for your next jewellery purchase, get in touch with Nova Diamonds and we will see what’s possible.
